TomTom Australia App Reviews

Best GPS available - but a few bugs...

Ive used quite a few of the available GPS apps and I can honestly say that this is the best out there in terms of usability. Some of the other competitors apps have big usability issues, and seems like clunky ports of their existing software to the iPhone. This TomTom app seems to be written from the ground up to be iPhone friendly. The issues that I have with this first version, however are: - The volume control for the voice overs doesnt work when plugged into a dock connector (like the one that you might plug into your car, for example). This makes it really annoying when youre trying to listen to some music at the same time, and then because the audio from the GPS is highly compressed (dynamic range compression), it deafens you. So youre left either listening to the whisper of music, or being deafened by the volume control. The volume control works when the dock connector is not plugged in, however. For reference, Im using a 32GB iPhone 3GS. - The font size of the readout down the bottom is too small. On some of the other GPS apps out there, the font size is nice and big and readable. - The speed limit in particular is too small. They have a a nice 32/60 km/h readout. But trying to focus in on the "60" (which is your current speed limit), is just too small. I much prefer the read out on other GPSs which have a big red speed limit sign posted on the top right of the GPS display, that also gives you a warning when youre over the speed limit. All in all, this is a great app. And it will be come my GPS of choice. I really hope they fix up these little niggly bugs. Its a little big annoying given that theyve had so many years to produce this software, but, I give them 4/5 stars until then.

Great, but volume control through dock connector needs to work.

Im getting rid of my old GPS unit because this is so good. Just wish it wasnt so loud compared to the music and that the volume control through the dock worked. Also Id love to be able to install voices, custom POI sets and other things like the stand-alone TomToms. Id recommend it if you can live with the above.

App doesnt work in central Sydney!!!

I bought the app on the release date and have been trying to use it in any way possible. I have full signal and am in Sydney city and only ever get "poor gps signal" in the Tom Tom app which means that it wont work. As a result the app is useless. Really dissapointing and a huge waste of money. Pay the cash and buy a sat nav for your car from a physical store, but dont go Tom Tom brand!

does the job,but need lots of improvement

im fan of tomtom on my wm system, however i feel completely disappointed with tomto for iphone.crash a lot!!!!fix it tomtommmm. i would recommend s*gic at the moment.

The new 1.2 version does not even load

App was working perfectly for months now. Just upgraded to the latest 1.2 version and it shows the TomTom splash screen, then goes back to the iPhone finder. Its broken. DOES NOT LOAD. I would not recomend upgrading just yet.

Great!

Works so well that Im not going to bother with a standalone GPS any more. Recommended!

No real time traffic, unfair

No HD and real time traffic in this edition as other countries edition. Unfair!!! Please add it. I know you could .I have seen many gps with this function in the shop, includes tomtom.please it is really useful when we met a traffic jam unfortunately. It deserve five star if there is such function added.

TomTom App & Car Kit

The app works well but people should know - hard to find this info - that the app draws more power than the TomTom car kit can deliver. Havent tested how long it takes to discharge but be warned.

Recent Update

Following the review from Samthedentist, I also am having similar trouble with the names of cities and streets not bring mentioned. Also, could any routes crossing Sydney Harbour say bridge or tunnel? The whole keep right then keep left isnt very helpful.

No longer working

Since the upgrade after iOS 6 every time I open the app it goes straight to a browse map blank screen and then crashes.

Newest version introduced a few major bugs

Update - Dec 8th - Down to 1 star: Installed latest update only to find my traffic info was "unable to update". I have a traffic subscription which expires in Feb 2013 so thought something must be wrong. I contacted TomTom support and was told O cant transfer my subscription to my "new" phone and that I would need a new subscription. Attempts to get a refund on the remaining time on the subscription failed. Ive submitted a complaint to the BBB and Apple, but likely nothing will come of it. Ive recommended TomTom to a huge number of people over the years. To those who subscribed for HD traffic at my advice, Im sorry. If you are looking for a navigation app for your iPhone, lo elsewhere. Uninstalled the TomTom app today. Update Dec 3rd: -Traffic Updates isnt working -TomTom places search is useless and 18-24 months out of date (no way to submit corrections to list data). -Considering uninstalling (Nov 29th 2012 update): IMPORTANT! This version removed the google places search function and replaces it with a far inferior "TomTom" searchz. 4 of my 5 first searches were wrong. Remember, most of Apple Maps data came from TomTom so it is clear the quality of their Australian database is terrible. Problems with missing words have been addressed. GPS still makes mistakes getting onto Sydney Harbour Bridge from city (my cars satnav does too). Without google search Im lowering score to 2/5 stars for this latest version Aug 21, 2012 update: Ive been using TomTom Auatralia on and off for the last year and for the most part it has performed very well. Last week (Aug 21) an update came through that introduced a major issue. The names of towns and some street names are no longer prompted. As an example, I was driving to the Sydney CBD and TomTom prompted me to "Follow the F6 towards" and then silence. In previous versions it would say the city name. It is very annoying. Another issue I have with the TomTom app relates to adding a stopover point on a previously started trip, say youre driving along the highway and need to refuel. If you try to search for a petrol station from the Points of Interest section it will show you a list of stations based on distance including behind you. It would be nice if the list were to consider your route and show you the options available to you in a more logical way. Id be much happier to drive an extra bit to not have to leave my current route. TomTom has a pretty good idea of where Im heading and should be able to plan accordingly.

HD Traffic not working

Since upgrading to iphone5 and reinstalling the app for Australia, HD traffic is not working. It says it restored my purchase but I get the "spinning bars of death" forever and the 12 month subscription to HD traffic will not activate. Naturally I have been charged for it on iTunes but not receiving the service. Useless not having traffic info in Sydney so, Not happy Tom Tom :-( Will delete and go buy a Garmin Nuvi dash mount. Bye Tom Tom .... X

Outdated

Gold Coast and Surfers Paradise are way out of date. Theyve built a light rail here, that has screwed up roads, that this app doesnt know about!

Show no respect for existing customers

I wish there is a zero star option. I paid a full price a while ago because the APP claims to offer free update of speedy camera update and traffic. Now suddenly they lower the price and drop these two features I paid for. Then they ask me to pay for them again! I dont know how the rest of Tomtom customers will feel about it. But I will not embrace it.
